Nairobi

Nairobi is the national capital and largest city of Kenya. It is also the capital of the Nairobi Province and of the Nairobi District. Its name comes from the Maasai phrase "Enkare Nairobi" (which translates to "place of cool waters"). Its area is 696 sq km (269 sq mi) and its population is 3,200,000. Nairobi is an established hub for business and culture and is one of the most prominent cities in Africa politically and financially.

Nairobi was founded by the British in 1889 as a rail depot for the Mombasa-Kampala railway. It became the capital of the East Africa Protectorate (Kenya Colony after 1920) in 1905. The city grew around administration and tourism. The continuous expansion of Nairobi resulted in conflicts with the Maasai and the Kikuyu. Pressure exerted from the locals onto the British resulted in Kenyan independence in 1963, with Nairobi as the capital of the new republic. Nairobi has experienced rapid growth throughout its history.

Nairobi enjoys the status of a fully administrative county/region and has eight divisions and forty-nine locations. The city has a subtropical highland climate.

The Nairobi area is primarily served by Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, with Wilson Airport as a secondary airport. The city has its share of tourist attractions, one of them being the Nairobi National Park. The primary business districts are the Central Business District and Upper Hill. Universities in the city include the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University. It is also the sporting centre of East Africa.
